We work hard to craft our bodies and maximize our appearance. We eat pretty well, spend a lot of time at the gym and otherwise take care of ourselves. Yet sometimes, despite our best efforts, we aren’t able to achieve the exact contours and shape that we hoped to attain.
For individuals who live a healthy lifestyle, yet are frustrated with certain aspects of their appearance, cosmetic procedures can tremendously improve stubborn areas and boost confidence. These procedures are frequently the “missing link” patients have needed to achieve their desired looks.
While surgery is often the best solution to achieve a desired look; however, proper post-operative care and habits are critical to maintaining those results.
In liposculpturing patients, for example, Dr. Matlock skillfully removes stubborn fat and sculpts pleasing contours across the body. With a Brazilian Butt Lift, Dr. Matlock artfully removes fat from designated areas of the body, then places that fat in the buttocks to create a more rounded, balanced, and firm posterior.
Why Dr. Matlock recommends the Keto Diet to Enhance Surgery Results
Dr. Matlock himself is a National Physique Committee (NPC) competitor. He understands precisely what it takes to achieve and maintain your desired look. That’s why he recommends patients follow a keto diet to enhance their surgery results.
Following liposculpturing, your body will continue to heal, with ultimate results seen after six weeks. While you will need to limit strenuous activity during your recovery period (for two weeks), you can eat an optimal diet immediately following a cosmetic procedure.
Dr. Matlock provides every patient with a diet and personalized exercise program to maintain and enhance results. His post-surgical dietary recommendations always follow the keto protocol although depending on the situation, he may recommend a high protein, low carb, low-fat diet.
How a Keto Diet Works
A ketogenic diet is a very low-carb, high-fat (good fats) diet that puts your body into a metabolic state called ketosis. Putting your body into ketosis ensures it is highly efficient at burning fat for energy.
A standard ketogenic diet typically includes 75% fat, 20% protein, and only 5% carbs (including “healthy” carbs like fruits and vegetables).
On a keto diet, you’ll be strictly reducing or (ideally) eliminating the following foods:
- Sweets and sugars, including soda, juice, candy, ice cream, and smoothies
- Grains like wheat products, quinoa, rice, and pasta
- Fruit is reduced, except perhaps an infrequent handful of berries for their antioxidant benefits
- Beans and legumes, including black beans, chickpeas, and lentils
- Root vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, and carrots
- Processed foods, which are often high in carbs and added sugar (or sugar substitutes, which can affect ketosis)
- Many condiments and sauces, which can be sugar and unhealthy fat bombs
- Unhealthy fats like vegetable oil, mayonnaise and more
- Alcohol can throw your body out of ketosis and derail your progress
How a Keto Diet Impacts Surgery Results
You may be wondering how eating a high-fat diet after surgery will actually reduce your total body fat. That’s because a keto diet encourages the body to burn fat as energy. It helps the body operate as a well-oiled machine while also supporting and preserving muscle mass.
Our bodies typically get energy through glycolysis. This is how our bodies break down carbohydrates into glucose for energy. Glycolysis encourages insulin production, which in turn promotes storage of body fat and blocks the release of fat from adipose tissues.
When you’re following a ketogenic diet, your fat reserves are released and broken down. Fat is no longer stored in the body, but used as energy instead of glucose. In addition to a range of health benefits (including neurological benefits, cardiovascular improvements, and better skin among many others), this results in the body more efficiently burning fat and maintaining a sculpted, toned look.
