Chin Implants

The appearance of the chin greatly influences the appearance of the face. A chin that is not in proportion to the rest of the upper face creates imbalance and detracts from the beauty that there may already be.

Most patients seeking enhancement of the chin area would benefit from chin augmentation. This is a procedure in which the area of the chin is increased in volume and projection. Although there are numerous ways to accomplish this, Our preferred method is to use an implant.

Some other patients may need reduction in the size of the chin or an improvement in the soft tissues around the chin. The correct procedure for an individual can only be determined after a thorough examination and consultation.

Techniques

A chin augmentation can be performed in a variety of ways. Our approach is to use an incision located inside the mouth near the area of the chin. In this way, no external scars are created. We use a specially designed chin implant for the augmentation. The size of the implant is chosen after a careful analysis of the face is performed. The goal is to use an implant which creates balance and harmony among the different features of the face. Once inserted, the implant is not visible. It also feels natural when touched. A more thorough discussion, including a review of the implant, is done during the consultation.

Recovery

There is very little bruising after this procedure. There will be swelling which resolves after approximately 2 weeks.

A special tape may need to be worn around the chin for approximately a week. The incision inside the mouth heals very well.

Most people return to work within a week.

Results

This is a man who requested an improvement in the balance of his lower face. As you can see in the “Before” picture, the projection of the chin is less than ideal. A chin augmentation can improve the relationship of the lower face to the upper face, creating harmony among the features. We take detailed photographs during the consultation which We use to create life size prints. Precise measurements are made and the appropriate size and shape implant is selected. In this patient, we chose to use a medium size chin implant because it would create more projection while maintaining a natural look that would be in proportion to the rest of the face. The “After” pictures show a stronger chin with improved projection. The result creates a more balanced appearance to the lower face.

When we analyze a face, we examine each of the features and assess the relative proportions. Usually, a change in one feature will enhance the overall appearance of the face by reestablishing balance. Often, subtle changes in multiple features can be synergistic, creating an overall greater improvement. In some cases, performing a rhinoplasty, chin augmentation, cheek reduction, cheek enhancement or any combination of the above may dramatically improve the harmony among the features of the face.
